Wet Harvesting
(They do not grow under water)
During wet harvesting, a section of bog is flooded
with a foot or so of water the night before harvesting. A machine
called a water reel loosens the submerged vines with a series of horizontal
paddles. This causes the naturally-buoyant cranberries to detach from the
vines and float to the surface of the water. They are then corralled and
pulled to the edge of the bog. The fruit is loaded into large trucks by a
conveyor. During washing and screening all leaves, twigs and debris are
removed. The cranberries are then inspected for freshness, color and size.
Only the best cranberries are packaged and sold at The American Cranberry
Company.
